All animals arriving in Bermuda must be accompanied by the following:

- a copy of their import permit

- their original health certificate (issued within the 10 days prior to animals arrival), which includes the identify, contact information, and signature of the issuing veterinarian

- a properly endorsed CITES document (only required for an animal of an endangered species)

If you want to import, use or export controlled chemicals, you need to apply for a permit. The list of Controlled Chemicals can be found in the Clean Air Regulations 1993.

You must obtain, complete and submit an application to import plant material before importing any plants, seeds, bulbs, tubers, rhizomes or cuttings. Use this application for all plant material except for flowers, fruit, mushroom spawn and wood.

You must apply for a permit before exporting any plant, seed, fruit or plant product (including wood) overseas. The country into which you are taking (sending) the plant material will determine the entry requirements. The receiving country may require a Phytosanitary Certificate from the exporting country (Bermuda) or they may issue an import permit to the local exporter, verifying clearance of the shipment to be imported into their jurisdiction.

You must complete and submit an Application to Import Plant Material as the first step in the process of importing Christmas trees into Bermuda.

All applications for Christmas trees must be received by the Plant Protection Library by the end of June so that preparations can be made for the overseas pre-inspection.

You can import insects for biological control, food, or research. Importation of insects for entertainment purposes (e.g. butterflies at weddings) is not permitted.

You must apply for an application to import insects in order to bring any insects to Bermuda for the above purposes.

A pesticide is any substance (including an organism) that directly or indirectly controls, destroys, attracts, or repels any organism or disease that is injurious, noxious, or troublesome to plants or animals.

You must apply for a permit to import any pesticide into Bermuda.

Soil and topsoil are prohibited entry into Bermuda, though Bermudians can import grower’s mix or “potting soil” with a special permit. Potting soil is defined as any medium in which plants can be grown.   Coconut coir and specialised mixes such as orchid mixes also require a permit.

You must apply for a release form to import live flowers, floral arrangements, and greenery into Bermuda. This form tells Customs that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has authorized the release of the shipment directly to the importer.

This process is not the same as importing plants, bulbs, tubers, rhizomes, and cuttings for propagation

You must apply for a permit before importing fresh fruit or vegetables that are considered High Risk Produce.pdf or from a High Risk Areas.pdf. All produce is subject to inspection upon entry into the island.

The following items are prohibited entry:

- Fresh, unfrozen corn on the cob

- Fresh, untreated, unfrozen carrots

- Fresh, unfrozen sweet potatoes

- Fresh, unfrozen mangoes, papaya, guavas, and other fruit-fly hosts that are not hot-water treated or irradiated

Seeds coming into Bermuda are regulated by the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources, but you don’t need a special permit to import seeds. Seeds for animal or human consumption are not regulated under this policy.

The following seeds are prohibited from entering Bermuda:

-Citrus

-Mangifera

-Musaceae

-Palmae/Arecaecae

-Persea

-Any species which is known to be invasive or shows invasive tendencies

-Genetically modified seeds

-Seeds treated with pesticides for consumption by the general public (commercial farmers are permitted to import seeds treated with approved pesticide treatments, provided application is made in advance)

To import sand, stone, and gravel to Bermuda you must:

Complete and submit an Application to Import Sand, Stone and Gravel

Obtain a certificate of treatment (heat or fumigation), nematode test results, or a sample of the product

The Plant Protection Laboratory will assess the application to ensure all documentation has been provided. Applications requiring on-island nematode testing will require additional processing time. Your application will be denied if all documentation is not provided or the product is contaminated.
