If you like to eat Bermuda mussels...

Please remember that if you are buying local mussels, you should only be buying from a registered mussel fisher. If in doubt, ask to see their commercial fishing license ID card.

If you like to collect your own mussels – remember:

  • By law, you can only do this by freediving while using mask and snorkel. You may not use SCUBA.
  • Respect the environment. Do not cause damage to the mussels’ habitat beyond collecting the mussels. The use of a chisel to remove mussels is very destructive to the surface to which the mussels are attached.
  • Mussels often grow together in clumps that include some individuals too small to be worth eating. If you sort your mussels as you collect, these small shells can be returned to their habitat so that they can continue to grow. They can then be harvested later, once they are large enough.
